Bond and spy sound

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Bond and spy sound · In 1962 Dr. No was given a guitar riff as its signature tune: the James Bond Theme, credited to Monty Norman and arranged by John Barry. Barry then became the regular composer of the series. He combined big brass chords, jazzy horns and electric guitar with a strong title song, such as ‘Goldfinger’ (1964), sung by Shirley Bassey. For The Ipcress File (1965) he used a cimbalom, a Hungarian hammered dulcimer, for a cool spy sound. In On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) he deployed a Moog synthesizer. From 1997 David Arnold continued this style in the Bond films, including Casino Royale (2006).

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the twang guitar, the big brass stabs and the tense, unresolved final chords.
