Francis Lai

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Francis Lai (1932–2018) was born in Nice, the son of market gardeners of Italian descent. In Marseille he discovered jazz. In Paris he became part of the musical world of Montmartre. He wrote songs and accompanied Édith Piaf. In 1965 he met the director Claude Lelouch. Their first film together was Un homme et une femme (1966). The music was recorded in advance, and Lelouch played it on set to inspire the actors. Lai often worked with Lelouch afterwards, including on Vivre pour vivre (1967). For Love Story (1970) he won an Oscar. That soundtrack reached number two on the American Billboard chart. Lai wrote music for more than a hundred films and some six hundred songs.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice how a single simple, singing melody carries the whole piece and keeps returning, with a small line-up and a calm rhythm.
