Justin Hurwitz
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Justin Hurwitz (born in 1985) studied at Harvard, where he got to know the director Damien Chazelle. Since then he has written the music for his films. In Whiplash (2014) everything revolves around jazz drumming. In La La Land (2016) he revived the Hollywood musical, with songs that refer to old film musicals and jazz. He won two Oscars with it, for the score and for the song City of Stars. For First Man (2018) he used a theremin, an electronic instrument that you play without touching it. In Babylon (2022) he wrote loud jazz for a big band. Hurwitz builds his scores around a few strong themes that keep returning.
