Japanese New Wave and arthouse

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Japanese New Wave and arthouse · Around 1960 Japanese directors such as Nagisa Ōshima, Masaki Kobayashi and Hiroshi Teshigahara made radical, modern films. Tōru Takemitsu, a largely self-taught composer, wrote the music for many of them. In Seppuku (1962) he used the biwa, a Japanese lute, with sharp, isolated notes. For Suna no onna (1964) he processed string sounds into a dry, grainy sound. He saw sound and silence as a single whole. Ryuichi Sakamoto, a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra, acted in Ōshima's Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983) and wrote the music for it. Takemitsu worked with Kurosawa on Ran (1985).

Listening

Listening tip. Notice silence as part of the music, and isolated, sharp sounds instead of continuous melodies.
