Ryuichi Sakamoto

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952–2023) studied composition at the Tokyo University of the Arts and became known with the electronic pop group Yellow Magic Orchestra. In Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983) he played a role alongside David Bowie and also wrote the music. The title theme, a pentatonic melody with a synthesizer sound reminiscent of little bells, became world famous. For The Last Emperor (1987) he won an Oscar together with David Byrne and Cong Su. He combined romantic orchestral music, minimal music and electronics. Later he worked more and more with texture and noise, as in The Revenant (2015), together with Alva Noto.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the simple, repeated melody lying over shifting chords, and the combination of piano, strings and synthesizer.
