Collectors’ Items

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Collectors’ Items · Collectors' Items brings together two sessions with largely different musicians. The first took place in 1953. Miles Davis then played with Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker, who for contractual reasons was credited as Charlie Chan on tenor saxophone. According to him it was chaotic: Parker drank heavily and spoke condescendingly, and fell asleep after an argument. The recordings were left on the shelf for years. Meanwhile Parker died in 1955 and the trumpeter moved to Columbia in 1956.

Because he still had a contractual obligation to Prestige, in 1956 he recorded a second session so that there would be enough material for an album. Only Rollins returned. The new pianist Tommy Flanagan and bassist Paul Chambers had only just arrived in New York, and Art Taylor was on drums. Besides Compulsion, 'Round Midnight and two versions of The Serpent's Tooth, the album includes In Your Own Sweet Way, Vierd Blues and No Line.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen first to The Serpent's Tooth (Take 1) and then to Take 2. Try to hear how the two recordings of the same piece differ from each other.
