Clifford Brown

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The trumpeter Clifford Brown, from Wilmington, Delaware, was encouraged as a young musician by Dizzy Gillespie and Fats Navarro. In 1954 he played on Art Blakey's A Night at Birdland and then led a quintet with the drummer Max Roach that helped shape hard bop. Brown had a warm, round tone and a technique that never sounded boastful. He wrote pieces such as Joy Spring and Daahoud. Moreover he lived without drugs or drink, which stood out in that scene. In June 1956 he was killed in a car accident at the age of 25. Benny Golson wrote I Remember Clifford in his memory. Almost all later trumpeters name him as a model.
