Wynton Marsalis

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Wynton Marsalis grew up in New Orleans, the son of the pianist Ellis Marsalis. He names Louis Armstrong and Clifford Brown as his great examples. He studied at the Juilliard School and in 1980 played in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. In 1984 he won Grammys in both jazz and classical music. He became the face of the Young Lions and argued for acoustic jazz with swing and blues. From 1987 he built up the jazz programme at Lincoln Center in New York, of which he became artistic director. For his oratorio Blood on the Fields he received the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1997, the first jazz musician to do so.
