Trumpet Concertos · On this album Wynton Marsalis plays trumpet concertos by Joseph Haydn, Leopold Mozart and Johann Nepomuk Hummel. He was accompanied by the National Philharmonic Orchestra under Raymond Leppard. Thomas Mowrey produced the record. It was his first classical album and it came out at the same time as his second jazz album, Think of One. Thus the twenty-one-year-old Marsalis was, according to AllMusic, the most celebrated interpreter of both classical music and jazz since Benny Goodman.

Marsalis wrote the cadenza in the first movement of the Haydn concerto himself. It begins with two musical questions, which he answers boldly, followed by dialogues and large leaps, all within the classical style. Gramophone magazine called his playing very impressive. In 1984 the album won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist with Orchestra.

Listening tip. Listen to the first movement of the concerto in E-flat and notice the cadenza, in which the trumpet seems to ask questions and answer them itself.
