Black Codes (From the Underground)

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Black Codes (From the Underground) was released in 1985. Wynton Marsalis played trumpet in a quintet with his brother Branford on tenor and soprano saxophone, Kenny Kirkland on piano, Charnett Moffett on double bass and Jeff Watts on drums. On Aural Oasis, Ron Carter played bass. The producer was Steven Epstein, and the liner notes were written by Stanley Crouch.

The album won two Grammys in 1986. In 2023 the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry. It described it as one of the trumpeter's most beloved and artistically successful recordings: a record that looks back at the acoustic jazz of the mid-twentieth century, but with a touch of its own from the 1980s.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Black Codes and notice how the trumpet and the saxophone play together with the rhythm section. Try to hear what sounds like acoustic jazz from the mid-twentieth century.
