Roy Hargrove
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Roy Hargrove from Texas was discovered as a schoolboy by Wynton Marsalis and came to New York via Berklee. He was counted among the Young Lions and named trumpeters such as Clifford Brown and Freddie Hubbard as models. With the Cuban group Crisol he won a Grammy in 1998 for Habana. With the RH Factor he blended jazz with soul, funk and hip-hop, and he played on albums by D'Angelo and Erykah Badu. He also remained a committed hard bop trumpeter. He died in 2018 at the age of 49.
Listening
Listening tip. Hear how the trumpet swings as easily as it plays over a soul groove.
