Public Eye

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Public Eye is trumpeter Roy Hargrove's second album. It was recorded in October 1990 and released in March 1991 on Novus/RCA. The band features saxophonist Antonio Hart, pianist Stephen Scott, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Billy Higgins. Larry Clothier was the producer.

The record mixes well-known pieces such as September in the Rain and What's New and a very fast version of Crazeology with strong original songs such as Public Eye and Lada. Scott Yanow heard Hargrove playing in a style not far removed from that of Lee Morgan, but with a soulful sound of his own. The Rolling Stone Album Guide praised the interplay of Hargrove and Hart, of the kind you usually expect from experienced musicians. The Chicago Tribune still missed individuality, while Spin felt that the album shows Hargrove's growth as a bandleader and puts the twenty-two-year-old Hart in the spotlight.

Listening tip. Listen to Little Bennie (Crazeology) and notice the high tempo and how trumpet and alto saxophone answer each other.
