The Vibe
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Vibe is trumpeter Roy Hargrove's third studio album and was released on 8 April 1992 on Novus/RCA. He played in a quintet with alto saxophonist Antonio Hart, pianist Marc Cary, bassist Rodney Whitaker and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. Guests also took part, including Branford Marsalis, David Fathead Newman and Cap'n Jack McDuff on Hammond organ.
Hargrove was only 22 at the time. Critics already saw in him one of the better trumpeters in hard bop. The AllMusic reviewer called the record a fine example of his rapidly emerging style. Others heard mainly jazz nostalgia for the sixties, and felt that he was still at the beginning of a potentially brilliant career. Of Where Were You?, one journalist wrote that these were ballads in which he felt at home.
