Maiden Voyage

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Maiden Voyage is Herbie Hancock's fifth album as a leader, released on 17 May 1965 by Blue Note. It was recorded on 17 March 1965 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Alfred Lion produced. Besides Hancock (piano), the players are Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), George Coleman (tenor saxophone), Ron Carter (bass) and Tony Williams (drums). Hancock, Coleman, Carter and Williams had shortly before played together in Miles Davis's quintet.

It is modal jazz and post-bop, conceived as a record about the sea. Many titles refer to water or sea creatures, and the group builds the atmosphere mainly through space. The title track, "The Eye of the Hurricane" and "Dolphin Dance" became jazz standards. The Penguin Guide to Jazz includes the record in its Core Collection. AllMusic called it perhaps Hancock's best of the 1960s. In 1999 the album received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award.

Listening

Listening tip. In "Dolphin Dance", listen to the melody: Hancock says that Count Basie's "Shiny Stockings" was the main inspiration.
