The George Benson Cookbook

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The George Benson Cookbook · The George Benson Cookbook is the guitarist George Benson's third studio album and his second under the producer John Hammond. His quartet is modelled on that of Jack McDuff, with the baritone saxophonist Ronnie Cuber, the organist Lonnie Smith and the drummer Jimmy Lovelace or Marion Booker. On some pieces the trombonist Bennie Green and the percussionist Pucho also play.

Cuber's baritone sax gives the group a richer, denser sound than McDuff with his tenor sax. The whole is soul jazz, with an emphasis on rhythm. According to the Hard Bop Homepage, the trombone and percussion gave a bop feel that appealed to jazz lovers and critics. On All of Me Benson also sings himself.
