Inner City Blues

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Inner City Blues · Grover Washington Jr. made his debut with this album, recorded in September 1971 at the Van Gelder Studio and released in 1972 on Kudu. Creed Taylor produced, and Bob James wrote the arrangements and conducted. Ron Carter, Eric Gale and Idris Muhammad, among others, also play.

The title song is a cover of Marvin Gaye's recent hit of June 1971. Bill Withers's Ain't No Sunshine, released shortly before, is also on the record, alongside Mercy Mercy Me, Georgia on My Mind and I Loves You Porgy. Thom Jurek of AllMusic called it a stunning debut and a milestone and turning point in jazz. A series of albums for the label followed until the end of the 1970s.

Listening

Listening tip. In Inner City Blues, listen to how the saxophone takes over Gaye's melody.
