Vaporwave
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Vaporwave arose around 2010 on the internet. As Chuck Person, Daniel Lopatin slowed down snippets of 1980s pop songs and let them repeat endlessly. In December 2011, Ramona Xavier released the album Floral Shoppe as Macintosh Plus, full of slowed-down soul, lift music and advertising jingles. The name refers to vaporware: software that is announced but never appears. Vaporwave plays with the feel of old computers, shopping malls and adverts, and is half joke, half criticism of consumer society.
Listening
Listening tip. In Lisa Frank 420 / Modern Computing, hear how a slowed-down snippet of Diana Ross's It's Your Move keeps starting over, as if the record is stuck.
