David Sanborn

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The alto saxophonist David Sanborn grew up in St. Louis and played the saxophone as a child to strengthen his lungs after polio. He played with blues musicians and, at Woodstock, in Paul Butterfield's band. As a studio musician he played on records by David Bowie, Stevie Wonder and James Taylor; his solo on Bowie's Young Americans became well known. From 1975 he made albums of his own. His tone is sharp, emotional and loud, with influences from rhythm and blues. That made him one of the best-known saxophonists in smooth jazz and pop. He also hosted the television programme Night Music. He died in 2024.
