Voyeur

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Voyeur is the sixth studio album by the alto saxophonist David Sanborn and was released in 1981 on Warner Bros. Well-known session musicians play on the record, among them the guitarist Hiram Bullock and the drummer Steve Gadd. The bassist and composer Marcus Miller plays a key role: he wrote some of the songs and provided the funky rhythms and colourful backdrops. The guitarist Buzz Feiten, who was attracting a lot of attention at the time with the Larsen-Feiten Band, adds his recognisable guitar sound to Let's Just Say Goodbye.

AllMusic calls the record an excellent example of the music of this highly influential saxophonist. The song All I Need Is You, written by Miller, won the 1982 Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance. It was the first of seven Grammys the saxophonist has won so far.

Listening

Listening tip. In All I Need Is You, listen to the interplay between the alto saxophone and the funky rhythm section beneath it.
