Elis Regina

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Elis Regina Carvalho Costa, known as Elis Regina, was a Brazilian singer of bossa nova, MPB and jazz. She was born in 1945 in Porto Alegre and began as a child on the radio programme Clube de Guri. In her early teens she signed a record contract and a few years later travelled to Rio de Janeiro, where she recorded her first album. Her first albums included Viva a Brotolândia from 1961 and Poema de amor from 1962. Shortly before the military coup of 1964 she moved to Rio permanently.

Music and breakthrough

In 1965 she became known throughout Brazil through her performance of Arrastão, a song by Edu Lobo and Vinícius de Moraes, at the first song festival of TV Excelsior. Soon afterwards she became a regular guest on the television programme O Fino da Bossa on TV Record. She was known for her vocals, her interpretation and her stage presence, and was given the nicknames Hurricane and Little Pepper. In Europe she criticised the regime during a tour, and her popularity protected her, although she was later threatened with imprisonment. She later made albums such as Elis from 1966, Elis especial from 1968 and Como & porque from 1969. She had children with Ronaldo Bôscoli and with Cesar Camargo Mariano, and her daughter Maria Rita and son Pedro Mariano became singers themselves.

Influence

Elis Regina died in 1982 at the age of 36, which shocked Brazil. A musical wake at the Teatro Bandeirantes in São Paulo drew more than fifteen thousand fans. Her name stands for a voice of almost unlimited power and feeling, and for the way Brazilian popular music acquired a character of its own in the 1960s and 1970s.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Arrastão by Elis Regina and notice the fierce, almost spoken force with which she begins the song. Can you hear how she opens up in the chorus and how big her voice then sounds?
