Word of Mouth
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Word of Mouth is the second and last solo album by the bassist Jaco Pastorius and was released in 1981, when he was still playing with Weather Report. It is also the name of the big band he put together and with which he toured in 1982. His debut mainly showcased his electric bass, but here the emphasis was more on composing and arranging for a larger group. Those playing included Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Peter Erskine, Jack DeJohnette, Michael Brecker and Toots Thielemans on harmonica.
Even so, the bass stands out in the solo opening of Chromatic Fantasy by Bach and in the title song. Crisis has a fast bass figure that keeps running beneath the frantic soloing. John and Mary is dedicated to his children from his first marriage. The first 50,000 copies appeared without the musicians' names, owing to a legal dispute; later they were credited. The Penguin Guide to Jazz called it a wonderful record full of surprises.
