Wayning Moments

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Wayning Moments is saxophonist Wayne Shorter's third album and his last for Vee-Jay Records. It is a hard bop record that was recorded in November 1961, on the second and the sixth of that month. Alongside the bandleader on tenor saxophone play trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Eddie Higgins, bassist Jymie Merritt and drummer Marshall Thompson.

The repertoire is mixed. The saxophonist himself wrote Devil's Island, Dead End, Powder Keg and Callaway Went That-A-Way. Black Orpheus is by Luiz Bonfá and Antônio Maria, Moon of Manakoora by Frank Loesser and Alfred Newman, and All or Nothing at All by Arthur Altman and Jack Lawrence. The title song is by pianist Higgins. Later CD editions added alternate takes of all eight tracks, so that you can hear how the band played the same pieces each time in a slightly different way.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Black Orpheus and notice how saxophone and trumpet share the melody. Can you hear which of the two takes a solo first?
