Speak No Evil
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Speak No Evil is Wayne Shorter's sixth album, released in June 1966 on Blue Note. He recorded it in 1964, his first year in Miles Davis's quintet, alongside several other records for Blue Note. The music combines hard bop and modal jazz. Alongside Shorter on tenor saxophone play trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Elvin Jones. All the pieces are by Shorter himself.
The album is regarded as one of his best and as a high point of the Blue Note catalogue. The Penguin Guide to Jazz called it his most satisfying record. Murray Horwitz said in 2001 that it was almost a manifesto for his ideas, which had been new forty years earlier and still sounded fresh. Ben Ratliff wrote that almost every jazz musician born in or after the 1950s accepts this work as a foundation.
