City Lights

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Lee Morgan recorded City Lights on 25 August 1957, when he was only nineteen. Blue Note released the record the following year. It is a sextet: besides the trumpeter, the trombonist Curtis Fuller, George Coleman on tenor and alto saxophone, the pianist Ray Bryant, the bassist Paul Chambers and the drummer Art Taylor play. Alfred Lion produced and Rudy Van Gelder handled the recording.

AllMusic found Morgan in excellent form and saw how he held his own alongside his impressive accompanists. The reviewer names City Lights, You're Mine You and Just By Myself as highlights. DownBeat gave the album four out of five stars in October 1958 and praised Morgan's control of his instrument and his creativity.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in City Lights to Morgan's trumpet and notice how he makes himself heard between trombone and saxophone.
