Dizzy Atmosphere
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Dizzy Atmosphere is an album featuring members of Dizzy Gillespie's orchestra: the trombonist Al Grey, the saxophonist Billy Mitchell and the trumpeter Lee Morgan. It was recorded in 1957 and released on the Specialty label. The baritone saxophonist Billy Root, the pianist Wynton Kelly, the bassist Paul West and the drummer Charlie Persip also take part. Most of the pieces were arranged by Roger Spotts, three by Benny Golson.
Scott Yanow of AllMusic called the music modern bop for its time. He pointed to the Dishwater, which lasts more than ten minutes, to Over the Rainbow and to an early performance of Golson's Whisper Not. Morgan plays remarkably well throughout the record, Yanow wrote, and he was only eighteen years old at the time. The CD also includes alternate takes of three tracks.
