The Sidewinder

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Sidewinder · Lee Morgan recorded this album in 1964 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, for the Blue Note label. He played trumpet in a quintet that included Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone and Billy Higgins on drums. He wrote all the tracks himself.

The title track, probably his best-known composition, is a soulful boogaloo with a swaying twenty-four-bar theme. It became a jazz standard and also charted as a single in the United States. Blue Note initially pressed only 4,000 copies, but these sold out within days. The album became the label's best-selling record and saved the label from near bankruptcy. The track was also used in a TV commercial. Blue Note then wanted more records like it, and Morgan's next albums followed the same template. In 2024 the Library of Congress added the album to the National Recording Registry.

Listening tip. Listen in The Sidewinder to the swaying theme and notice the rhythm section of bass and drums underneath.
