Gangsta rap
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Gangsta rap took shape on the West Coast. After forerunners such as Schoolly D of Philadelphia and Ice-T of Los Angeles, N.W.A. of Compton, a suburb of Los Angeles, released Straight Outta Compton in 1988, with Fuck tha Police as an indictment of police violence. Lyrics about violence caused an outcry. In the mid-1990s the rivalry between the East and West Coast got out of hand; 2Pac (1996) and The Notorious B.I.G. (1997) were shot dead.
