2Pac
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Tupac Shakur, known as a rapper as 2Pac, was born in East Harlem, New York, in 1971. His mother Afeni Shakur was a member of the Black Panther Party. He took classes in drama, poetry and jazz at the Baltimore School for the Arts and moved to Marin City in California in 1988. He became one of the best-known rappers of the 1990s, as a storyteller about life in the neighbourhood and as the focal point of the feud between the East Coast and the West Coast.
Music and breakthrough
He took his first steps with the group Digital Underground. His own debut, 2Pacalypse Now, came out in 1991. Me Against the World (1995) went to number 1 on the Billboard 200 while he was in prison. Suge Knight of Death Row Records paid his bail, and 2Pac signed to that label. His first single there was California Love (1995), produced by Dr. Dre with Roger Troutman on the chorus. In 1996 the track spent two weeks at number 1 on the Hot 100. All Eyez on Me (1996), a double album, entered at number 1 straight away.
Influence
Besides music, he acted in films such as Juice (1992) and Poetic Justice (1993), with Janet Jackson. The rivalry with The Notorious B.I.G. and his label Bad Boy ran high, notably through the track Hit 'Em Up. In September 1996 2Pac was shot in Las Vegas. He died six days later, aged 25. After his death his work continued to appear. In 2017, in the first year he was eligible, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
