Underground

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Underground was released in 1997 on the Verve label. On this album the English saxophonist Courtney Pine plays jazz in which elements of hip hop are worked in. He himself plays soprano and tenor saxophone, bass clarinet and flutes, and wrote and arranged all the pieces.

He surrounded himself with American jazz musicians: pianist Cyrus Chestnut, bassist Reginald Veal, drummer Jeff Tain Watts, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and guitarist Mark Whitfield. To them are added DJ Pogo on turntables and singer Jhelisa. In this way a classic jazz line-up stands alongside a DJ, and that gives the album its own character.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Modern Day Jazz and notice how the turntable relates to the acoustic instruments: where do you hear jazz, and where hip hop?
