Modern Day Jazz Stories

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Modern Day Jazz Stories was released in 1995 by the English saxophonist Courtney Pine. In 1996 the album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. It also helped him win a Music of Black Origin Award for best jazz act.

Pine composed and arranged most of the pieces himself. There are also pieces by others: Don't 'Xplain is by Billie Holiday, In the Garden of Eden by Stanley Clarke and I've Known Rivers by Gary Bartz. In this way the record connects new jazz with older examples. The titles show that it is about stories: the album begins with a prelude, The Water of Life, and ends with an outro, Guiding Light. In between are titles such as The Unknown Warrior, a song for his ancestors. The source says no more about the recording and reception.

Listening tip. Listen to Don't 'Xplain and notice how Pine plays a well-known song from the jazz tradition in his own sound.
