In the Garden

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

In the Garden · After the break-up of the Tourists, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart started again in 1980, as Eurythmics. It began with a New Year's party in the studio of the German producer Conny Plank near Cologne. There they jammed with Robert Görl of Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, while Jaki Liebezeit and Holger Czukay of Can listened in. Plank arranged a contract with RCA and produced the debut. Clem Burke of Blondie also played on it.

Stewart sold two guitars and bought a drum machine, a Space Echo and a synthesizer. Under the influence of Plank and his guests he recorded all kinds of sounds, such as playground sounds in English Summer and a typewriter in She's Invisible Now. The album was released in October 1981 and went unnoticed. Singles such as Never Gonna Cry Again and Belinda got stuck. Critics called the electronic atmosphere intelligent and accessible, but also heard that it was not yet the later Eurythmics.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in English Summer to the sounds in the background, such as the children's voices from the playground, and notice how they give the song an atmosphere of its own.
