Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) · Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart built this album in a small studio in the attic of an old warehouse in London, where they lived and worked for seven months. After that they moved to a small room in Church Studios. Most of it went onto an 8-track recorder, with synthesizers, a sequencer and a drum machine. The whole record cost about 5,000 pounds. After a year and a half without success, it was their breakthrough, on both sides of the Atlantic.
The title track reached number two in England and number one on the American Hot 100. The video, popular on MTV, showed Lennox with gender-bending imagery. After that Love Is a Stranger, earlier a flop, was also re-released and became a hit. The Walk and This Is the House also became singles. Reviews were mixed to positive: some found the record strong and catchy, others felt something was missing. Stewart called the record one of the most important of 1983.
