R U Still Down? (Remember Me)

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

R U Still Down? (Remember Me) was released on 25 November 1997, well over a year after the death of 2Pac, and was his first album without his own involvement. The double album consists mainly of unreleased work from 1992 to 1994, from the time of Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z., Thug Life: Volume 1 and Me Against the World. The title comes from handwritten track lists that he made at the time. The production was led by We Got Kidz Productions, together with Afeni Shakur and Lisa Smith-Putnam. They gave old recordings new instrumentals.

The lyrics date from the time before the rivalry between the East Coast and the West Coast. In Open Fire, Thug Style and Only Fear of Death, a premonition of his death can be heard, according to the source. Do for Love and I Wonder If Heaven Got a Ghetto became hits. Critics were divided: Entertainment Weekly found many songs hardly worthy of demo status, but saw his talent breaking through.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Do for Love and notice how the soft, melodic mood of the song contrasts with the rawer songs elsewhere on this double album.
