Me Against the World
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
By late 1994, 2Pac was already a controversial rapper. He had a series of violent incidents behind him, was convicted in a sexual abuse case and received a prison sentence of one and a half to four and a half years. A day before the jury gave its verdict, he was shot and robbed in a studio in New York. Against that background, he made Me Against the World. He wanted to show the hip hop world his respect for the genre and made his lyrics more personal and thoughtful than before. The album appeared in March 1995, while he was in prison.
The producers included Shock G and Easy Mo Bee. Many songs are about fear, despair and poverty, such as If I Die 2Nite and Lord Knows. Old School is nostalgic and Dear Mama is a tribute to his mother. The album reached number 1 in the American chart and was counted by critics among the best hip hop albums. Dear Mama received a Grammy nomination.
