Fear

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Fear is John Cale's fourth solo album and was released on 1 October 1974 on Island Records. It is the first of three studio albums for Island, released within little more than a year. In the meantime Cale also produced records for others, such as Patti Smith's Horses. He sings and plays keyboards, guitars, viola, violin and bass. Guests include Richard Thompson of Fairport Convention and Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music.

In Gun, Manzanera and Eno play an unusual guitar solo together: Eno processes Manzanera's guitar playing with a synthesizer as he plays. According to Crawdaddy, the album is a patchwork of Cale's past, with short, clear melodies and a sparer sound than the exuberant orchestration of the previous record. Trouser Press called it a brilliant record full of surprises and unsettling songs. The Man Who Couldn't Afford to Orgy was released as a single.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Gun and notice the guitar solo, in which Manzanera's playing is processed by Eno's synthesizer.
