2Pacalypse Now

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

2Pacalypse Now · This debut appeared in November 1991. The recording took place at Starlight Sound Studio in Richmond, California. The production team Underground Railroad of Digital Underground made the music. The title plays on the 1979 war film Apocalypse Now.

It is a socially critical hip hop album. The lyrics deal with racism, police violence, poverty, gang violence, teenage pregnancy and drug use. Trapped, I Don't Give a Fuck and Soulja's Story stood out for their violent lyrics aimed at the police and the government. Brenda's Got a Baby became the second single. Vice President Dan Quayle called the record unfit to be released, after the lawyer of a police officer's killer had said that the album influenced his client. Critics praised the lyrics and the storytelling, but found the beats unimpressive. In 1995, the album went gold.
