Southern hip hop and crunk
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Southern hip hop and crunk · From the late 1980s, the southern United States also developed its own hip hop: Geto Boys in Houston, Three 6 Mafia in Memphis and OutKast in Atlanta, who made their debut in 1994. DJ Screw in Houston slowed records down to a syrupy sound, chopped and screwed. Around 2000, Lil Jon turned crunk into party music with shouted choruses and heavy 808 basses. Trap grew out of this southern hip hop.
Listening
Listening tip. In Get Low, hear the bare beat with the heavy 808, the shouted lines and the call to the crowd.
