Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz is an American hip-hop group from the southern United States, associated with crunk, a style of southern hip-hop. The early albums, such as Get Crunk, Who U Wit from 1997 and Put Yo Hood Up from 2001, were already attracting attention in their home region. The album Kings of Crunk appeared in 2002 and became the showpiece of the style. Certified Crunk followed in 2003 and Crunk Juice in 2004.
Music and breakthrough
The breakthrough came in 2003 with the single Get Low, featuring the duo Ying Yang Twins as guests. The song was already on Kings of Crunk. Get Low reached number two on the American Billboard Hot 100 and entered the top ten in the United Kingdom. It was regarded as the song that brought crunk to a wide audience. Several edited radio versions appeared, because the lyrics contain a great deal of strong language.
Influence
The music is made for the dance floor. Lil Jon also worked on Yeah! by Usher from 2004, in which a line from Get Low returns. Get Low has been used in films and computer games and still turns up at parties and in series. In this way the group showed that regional club music from the South could reach a wide audience.
