Early hip hop
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Early hip hop · On 11 August 1973, Kool Herc, who knew the sound systems of Kingston, DJed at a party on Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx. With two copies of the same record, he extended the break, and MCs began to rap over it. The first rap hit was Rapper's Delight (1979); The Message (1982) was the first rap hit to describe life in the ghetto.
Listening
Listening tip. In The Message, hear the slow tempo, the menacing mood and the synthesizer line that keeps returning.
