Technics SL-1200 and scratching

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Technics SL-1200 and scratching · In 1972, Matsushita released the SL-1200 under the name Technics, a turntable with direct drive. The motor is strong and holds its speed even when you hold the record back or turn it backwards with your hand. DJs in the Bronx used two turntables to repeat the drum break of a funk record endlessly. By moving the record rhythmically back and forth, scratching arose, which made the turntable an instrument. The SL-1200 became the standard in hip hop and club DJ booths all over the world.

Listening

Listening tip. Can you hear the rasping scratch sound? That is a DJ moving a record back and forth by hand.
