Breakbeat sampling (Amen break)

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Breakbeat sampling (Amen break) · In 1969, on Amen, Brother by The Winstons, the drummer Gregory Coleman played a drum solo of a few seconds. Hip hop producers sampled that break in the late 1980s. In the early 1990s, producers in London went further: they sped up the Amen break and other breaks to well above 160 beats per minute and chopped them into small pieces with samplers, which they put in new orders. Beneath them, they laid heavy bass lines from dub. This is how jungle arose, and from it drum and bass.

Listening tip. Do you recognise the same drum break at a different tempo? Listen to how the pieces have been cut into a new order.
