Soundsystem

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Soundsystem · In the poor districts of Kingston, from the 1950s, sound systems were in operation: mobile discotheques with home-built amplifiers and enormous speaker cabinets. At first they played American rhythm and blues, later Jamaican records of their own. Owners such as Duke Reid and Coxsone Dodd began recording records themselves in order to have something their competitor did not have. The deejay talked and toasted over the music, a forerunner of rap. DJ Kool Herc took that habit to the Bronx, where it grew into hip hop.

Listening

Listening tip. The deejay talks and shouts over an existing record: can you hear how the voice becomes an instrument?
