The mixing desk as instrument (dub)
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology
The mixing desk as instrument (dub) · In Kingston, producers made an instrumental version without vocals for the B-side of singles. The engineer King Tubby went further: in his small studio, he dropped instruments in and out on the mixing desk, added long echo and reverb, and filtered the sound. In this way, a new track was made from an existing recording: dub. The mixing desk was his instrument. Ideas from dub, such as space, a heavy bass and the remix, returned in hip hop, jungle, trip hop and dubstep.
