Dub
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Dub · Jamaican producers put an instrumental version of the riddim on the B-side of singles. King Tubby and Lee 'Scratch' Perry went further: they removed instruments and let them return, and put reverb and echo on drums, bass and snatches of vocals. That style is called dub and turned the studio into an instrument. The techniques of dub returned in jungle, trip hop and dubstep.
Listening
Listening tip. In King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown, hear how instruments disappear and come back, with echo on the drums.
