Dubstep
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Dubstep emerged in the early 2000s in South London, around Croydon, from UK garage, jungle and dub: a tempo of around 140 bpm, a rhythm with the snare on the third beat, so that it seems half as fast, and a heavy sub-bass. In America around 2010 Skrillex made dubstep hard and loud, with a distorted wobble bass that itself becomes the melody.

Listening tip. In Midnight Request Line, hear the space in the slow rhythm and the deep bass beneath it.
