Ableton Live

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Gerhard Behles and Robert Henke made techno in Berlin as Monolake. They wrote their own software in order to perform live with a computer. Together with Bernd Roggendorf, they developed that idea into Ableton Live, which was released in 2001. Other programs were made for the studio, Live above all for the stage. You launch separate pieces of music, loops, and they always run in time. The program also stretches recordings or compresses them until they fit the tempo. DJs and producers used it both to perform and to compose. Skrillex made his EP Bangarang in 2011 largely on tour, with Live on a laptop.

Listening tip. Listen to the repeated snippets: how are separate loops stacked on top of one another and taken away again?
