Baile funk

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Baile funk, called funk carioca in Brazil, emerged in the late 1980s at the dance parties (bailes) in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. DJs first played American Miami bass, fast hip hop with the drum machine. In 1989 DJ Marlboro released the album Funk Brasil, with lyrics in Portuguese. In the late 1990s came the tamborzão, a rhythm with drums from the Afro-Brazilian tradition. Cidinho & Doca sang about life in the favela, and later Anitta brought funk into Brazilian pop.

Listening

Listening tip. In Rap da Felicidade, hear the thumping drum machine beneath the refrain Eu só quero é ser feliz: I only want to be happy.
