Cidinho & Doca

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Cidinho & Doca is a Brazilian MC duo from Rio de Janeiro. Sidney da Silva, known as MC Cidinho, and Marcos Paulo de Jesus Peixoto, MC Doca, both grew up in Cidade de Deus, a favela with a lot of crime. They have known each other since childhood and went to the same school. In 1994 they broke through, after the MCs Juniór & Leonardo asked them to sing the chorus of their song Rap das Armas. Those two had written the song a year earlier, but they recorded a version with new lyrics with Cidinho and Doca. The chorus imitates the sound of a machine gun and for that reason quickly stuck in the mind.

Music and breakthrough

The duo belong to funk carioca, the hip-hop variant from Rio, and specifically to the subgenre proibidão, strictly forbidden funk. Such songs are often not played on the radio, because the lyrics seem to condone crime. A year later, in 1995, they made Rap da felicidade, on the album Eu só quero é ser feliz, in which they address social problems in the favelas. In 2008 Rap das Armas became known in Europe when it was used in a Brazilian film. Many DJs made a remix of it, and in several European countries, such as Sweden and the Netherlands, a remix reached the charts.

Influence

Cidinho & Doca show how a local genre from a Brazilian favela reached European dance floors through films and remixes. Their work is at once about life in the favela and about the reputation that life has.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Rap das Armas and notice the chorus that imitates the sound of a machine gun. Try to hear how the solid funk rhythm carries the song and how the two MCs trade lines.
