From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Anitta is the stage name of Larissa de Macedo Machado, born in 1993 in Honório Gurgel, a district of Rio de Janeiro. At the age of eight she sang in the choir of the church in her neighbourhood and received free dance lessons from a teacher who knew her mother. Her stage name comes from the character Anita in the book and television series Presença de Anita, a woman who could be sexy without being vulgar.
Music and breakthrough
After her first single Meiga e Abusada from 2012 she signed with Warner Music Brazil. Her debut album Anitta came out in 2013, went straight to number one in Brazil and produced the hits Show das Poderosas and Zen. In June 2013 the video clip of Show das Poderosas became the most-viewed music video in Brazil on YouTube. Later albums are Ritmo Perfeito in 2014, Bang! in 2015 and Kisses in 2019. With Versions of Me from 2022 and the single Envolver she also broke through internationally.
Influence
Anitta combines pop, funk and reggaeton and sings in Portuguese, English and Spanish. She is one of the best-known artists in Brazil and one of the most influential artists on social media, named in the Time 100 Next. She campaigns on issues including climate and nature. Her career shows how a singer from a poor district of Rio, with a mix of Brazilian styles and a sharp sense of the internet, can be heard worldwide.
