Cidinho & Doca & DJ Marlboro

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Cidinho & Doca & DJ Marlboro · Cidinho and Doca are MC Cidinho and MC Doca, a Brazilian funk duo from the world of funk carioca, the dance music of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. They are counted among the best-known singers of proibidão, songs that by a court ruling may not be played on the radio, because according to the judge they would glorify crime. The duo were popular in 1994 with the song Rap da Felicidade.

Music and breakthrough

DJ Marlboro played a key role in the movement. In 1989 he produced the compilation Funk Brasil, which is regarded as the starting point of funk carioca. The movement was then confirmed by a series of albums and songs. Cidinho and Doca later also made their own version of Rap das Armas, originally by Júnior e Leonardo, with adapted lyrics. That version became an international hit in 2008 and 2009, after the song had been heard in the film Tropa de Elite in 2007. Remixes, such as that by the Dutch DJ Quintino, reached number one in the Netherlands and Sweden in 2009.

Influence

Funk carioca is based on hard, minimalist drum machine rhythms, often with samples from Miami bass, and on raps in Brazilian Portuguese. The duo and DJ Marlboro show how a street music from Rio grew into a sound recognised worldwide.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Rap da Felicidade. Notice the hard, repeating beat and how the raps race through it with plenty of rhythm.
